Dr. Kenneth S. Snell is a forensic pathologist and works for Sanford Health Pathology Clinic. Snell has served as coroner and medical examiner for Minnehaha County since January 2011. The Minnehaha County coroner is responsible for certifying all non-natural deaths in the county and all natural deaths outside of a medical care facility. As the Minnehaha County medical examiner, Snell performs autopsies, collects evidence, generates formal reports and provides court testimony in criminal proceedings. Snell will provide a review of what is involved with the forensic pathology review of strangulation with specific consideration of how this impacts the work of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.
Cindy Cleays is a fellow South Dakota SANE currently working as an RN at Fall River Health Services in Hot Springs, SD. Cleays has received much additional education related to sexual assault and intimate partner violence, including a training from the National Strangulation Institute. Her personal background includes a 13-year marriage of severe domestic violence that included a strangulation that nearly ended her life. Cindy will provide her personal story and testament about the importance of healthcare professionals being education leaders.
What is the SANE Learning Collaborative?
South Dakota, like much of the country, suffers from a lack of trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs). The main goal of the SANE Program is to coordinate resources, training, and support for healthcare professionals across the state in order to improve the access and the delivery of services to both child and adult victims of sexual assault. Members of the collaborative will be able to ask questions amongst peers, access on-line resources, and be notified of upcoming meetings & trainings.
