Join Us October 5-6
Registration is open for the Community Response to Child Abuse Conference. This year’s conference will feature sessions from Victor Vieth of Zero Abuse and Nathan Earl of giantslayer.
Professional Registration: $150
Student Registration: $75
On-Demand Registration is available for those unable to attend in-person and will provide access to a minimum of 12 recorded conference sessions in an online training library published upon conference completion.

- 3 general sessions feature national experts and current best-practices.
- In 2022, 52 communities from 37 South Dakota counties attended and 800 learning hours were completed through on-demand portal.

Join Us August 31 for Poverty Simulation Experience
Thursday, August 31

Free and open to public
This activity is designed to allow participants to experience and gain insights into the complex issues associated with poverty. We all know that you cannot truly “escape” poverty in 90 minutes, but can you survive a day in the life of someone in the crisis of poverty? In the Poverty Escape Room, participants can gain a glimpse into the obstacles and barriers that individuals in poverty encounter on a daily basis and reflect on their experience with other participants. The goal is to foster awareness and understanding of the impact of poverty on the individuals and families we interact with regularly. The Poverty Escape Room also serves as a starting point for conversations on how we can collectively support and empower those living in poverty.
Attendance will be limited to the first 45 registrants.

Trauma-Informed Advocacy for Sexual Assault Victims
In partnership with SD Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault, we invite you to join us on August 16 for this online training session.
This training will focus on enhancing practices in supporting victims of sexual assault associated with the untested rape kit initiative. Attendees will analyze how trauma affects victims physiologically, broaden their knowledge in using trauma-responsive approaches and victim-centered support, hear first-hand experience from a Victim-Advocate’s perspective on how to increase victim engagement and rapport-building and explore methods to encourage multi-disciplinary collaboration.

Child & Adult Advocacy Studies
In a new article from Public News Service, Child & Adult Advocacy Studies Director, Kelly Bass, and recent certificate graduate, Tifanie Petro, provided an update on recent results from CAASt graduates and national recognition for the curriculum.

CPCM Happenings
As a WIC CIAO grant recipient, CPCM and our partners have attended several Sioux Falls-area community events in the last month. This collaboration aims to raise awareness through innovative outreach strategies, program modernization efforts, and reducing program delivery disparities. Connecting parents to concrete resources can help ensure a strong start for children and increase overall family functioning.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners attended a Clinical Skills Lab hosted at Western Dakota Tech’s Medical Simulation Center in July. This training provides clinical practice to nurses who are new SANEs or SANEs who have not had the opportunity to perform many exams.
30 area educators attended a free Child & Adult Advocacy Studies training last month. We’ll be joining several area school districts in the next few months with this learning opportunity. This training provides school personnel with knowledge for working in school multidisciplinary teams and discussion on the perceived barriers to implementing trauma-informed approaches.
