Bright Lights
Innovative collaborations are happening across the comprehensive early childhood landscape to ensure a strong start for children. The Bright Light series will showcase successes and outcomes achieved through collaborative, cross-sector or agency efforts, designed to ensure a strong start for children. In this feature, we highlight SD Act Early Team.
Training Series to Focus on Role of Fathers
Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment, through support from SD Department of Health will present a limited training series on fatherhood. Online, one-hour training sessions will begin on June 12 with six sessions provided on a weekly basis through July 17.
“CPCM is honored to highlight the important role of fathers through this training series,” said Chrissie Young, CPCM Director. “This series is designed to cover topics for a wide range of service providers, decision-makers, and community members.”
The series will be held exclusively online, allowing anyone from across the state to access these valuable training sessions. Topics will include impact of involved fathers, co-parenting techniques and strategies, father involvement in maternal and infant health, family resilience, diversity of fatherhood experiences across cultures, and impact of policies on father engagement.
“These sessions will be provided by regional and national experts on fatherhood,” Young stated. “We are thankful to South Dakota Department of Health for their support of this learning opportunity.”
The training series includes:
- June 12: Introduction to Fatherhood & Family Dynamics presented by J. Michael Hall, Strong Fathers Strong Families
- June 19: Co-Parenting presented by Dr. Brad Sachs, The Father Center
- June 26: Paternal Inclusion: Benefits to Maternal & Infant Health presented by Joel Austin, Daddy University
- July 3: Fatherhood and Family Resilience presented by D. L. Pos Ryant, Apprentice of Peace Youth Organization
- July 10: Cultural Competency and Diversity in Fatherhood presented by Jillian Baker, The Center for Parent and Teen Communication
- July 17: Policy and Structural Factors for Support Fathers presented by Dan Wuori, Early Childhood Policy Solutions

Cultural Competency Series In-Person Sessions Begin June 13
Service providers working with families with young children in the Sioux Falls-area are invited by CPCM and LSS to a free in-person training series. This training series will be held at The Coliseum, 515 N Main Ave in Sioux Falls on Thursdays from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Attendees are invited to bring their own lunch or lunch will be available onsite for purchase.

In-Home Childcare Business Bootcamp
The workshop will guide child cares through business planning, operations, marketing strategies, regulations, policies, pricing strategies, financial management, and more. Lunch is provided. The workshop will be held from 8am to 4pm on June 15 in Rapid City, June 27 in Lead, August 14 in Spearfish, August 17 in Sturgis, and August 21 in Rapid City. The Pregnancy Program is intended to improve maternal health outcomes through enhanced care coordination, services being provided in accordance with standards of care, and reducing barriers to care. Participating providers are eligible for enhanced reimbursement for care coordination and meeting prenatal care and postpartum care program objectives.

Navigating Risk and Protective Factors – At-Risk Infants, Children, and Pregnancy Associated Deaths in South Dakota
SD Department of Health’s Office of Child & Family Services hosted this webinar, presented by Dr. Kari Oyen, University of South Dakota. The webinar discussed common risk factors associated with child maltreatment and pregnancy-associated maternal and infant deaths. The recording is now available to view.
Indian Country Syphilis ECHO
The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) is proud to announce that it will be supporting the Indian Country Syphilis ECHO program, starting August 6th from 12-1pm CT, and continuing regularly on Tuesday every other week for 8 sessions. Free CE will be provided.
