Ray of Hope

Learn more about the power of primary prevention from South Dakota decision-makers and business leaders. This event will discuss:

  • Examples of primary prevention and how SD businesses and organizations can support primary prevention efforts.
  • Update on primary prevention policies adopted in the 2025 legislative session.
  • Economic benefits of family-forward workplace practices.
  • Panel discussion with South Dakota business leaders with family-forward workplace practices, featuring Nan Poppen with First Bank & Trust, Carissa Schoffelman with Click Rain, Michael Olson with Avera McKennan, and Sydney Bartunek with The Compass Center.

Businesses for Babies

72.5% of all South Dakota children under the age of 6 have all available parents in the labor force. Family-forward workplace policies ARE a primary prevention resource. Family-forward policies benefit the business, families, and South Dakota children.

  • Businesses: family-forward policies boost competitive advantage, attracting and retaining talent, increasing productivity, and reducing turnovers.
  • Families: employees of family-forward workplaces are more satisfied with their work, and engaged in facilitating nurturing and stable environments for their families.
  • South Dakota children: parents who work in family-forward businesses experience less stress and enhanced well-being, giving them time to support children’s safety, stability, and build nurturing relationships.

Looking Forward in Times of Transition

As we firmly settle into 2025, April marks a time for a renewed sense of purpose for CPCM. Child Abuse Prevention Month is a reminder that while we’ve made great strides in empowering South Dakota professionals, communities, and the public to know about, respond to, and prevent child abuse and neglect – our effort is far from complete.

CPCM’s work thus far, has been driven by state and federal direction, goals, and corresponding funding sources. Now more than ever, CPCM’s work requires support from you.

While future funding is uncertain, the need for our work is clear. In the first 3 months of 2025, we’ve experienced a 15% increase in training participants and an 8% increase in visitors to SDCPCM.com.

CPCM and University of South Dakota are committed to continuing our work and are identifying ways to innovatively carry forward in this time of transition. If you are unable to join us at the Ray of Hope Event on April 15 for our only fundraising appeal, support CPCM with a financial investment in the coordinated effort to end child maltreatment in our state.
