Cultural Competency Training Series (In-Person Sessions)
WIC CIAO Project: Cultural Competency Training Series
Service providers working with families with young children in the Sioux Falls-area are invited by CPCM and LSS to a free in-person training series. This training series will be held at The Coliseum, 515 N Main Ave in Sioux Falls on Thursdays from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Attendees are invited to bring their own lunch or grab lunch from the food truck located at the County Administration building.
Registration is requested. You can select which sessions interest your the most, or which dates and times fit best in your schedule.
Thursday, June 13: Cultural Awareness – Relating to Norms
In this session, we will explore and discuss key aspects of culture. Using descriptive cultural continuums and examples from lived experience we will identify and discuss cultural norms. Through interactive dialogue, participants will apply this information to their own culture and make connections to a culture different from their own. Participants will come away with a visual representation showing where they and someone they know would fall on cultural continuums including Time Orientation, Individualism and Collectivism, Direct and Indirect Communication and more.
Thursday, June 27: Cultural Awareness – Understanding Values
Participants will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of specific cultural norms and values. Grow awareness of our own cultural hooks and explore root causes of these cultural norms.
Thursday, July 25: Refugee Resettlement 101
Explore what it means to become a refugee and the process of resettlement from country of origin, to refugee camp, to the interview process, arrival and adjustment to life in a new country.
Thursday, August 8: Diversity Panel Interview
Listen to voices of immigrant and refugee residents as they speak to their backgrounds, what brought them to the US, some key points regarding life in their homeland, the main challenges in adjusting to life in the US and perspectives on how to support success for our culturally diverse clients.
Thursday, August 22: Cross-Cultural Communication
Engage in a language immersion experience and discuss challenges of language acquisition. Gain key insights about the backgrounds of multi-lingual learners and learn and practice techniques for effective communication with multi-lingual learners or non-native English speakers.
Thursday, September 12: Working with Interpreters
Participants in this course will gain an understanding of the role of the interpreter, the difference between interpretation and translation, and best practices for working through interpreters.
Thursday, September 26: Culturally Competent Outreach and Engagement
In this session, we will review some everyday cross-cultural scenarios and discuss qualities and approaches that would yield positive outcomes. Participants will explore ways to show respect and sensitivity and effectively engage with the diverse communities they serve.
