WIC Community Innovation and Outreach Project Update
As we wrap up the WIC-CIAO grant, CPCM extends gratitude for the WIC program and other partners’ support and involvement over the past 18 months. It has been a true pleasure to build relationships, increase opportunities for referral and collaboration, and to learn together while connecting more people to positive, persuasive messaging about WIC.
Whether you attended our events, provided training, or partnered with us in any other capacity, your contributions have been invaluable to the success of this project. We’ve enjoyed working alongside you and are excited to share some final report information soon, detailing all that we’ve accomplished together.
In the meantime, here are a few updates from WIC-CIAO:
Child Health Outcomes and Social Determinants of Health
The recorded session, Child Health Outcomes and Social Determinants of Health, is now available to view online. Thank you to Jennifer Weber, MPH, RD for joining us with multiple presentations across South Dakota in the first week of October.

Cultural Competency Series
We have concluded the Cultural Competency training series. Thank you to the 200+ individuals who have joined us online or in-person in the last year to learn about cultural awareness, refugee resettlement, working with interpreters, and more. You can now access the complete series online at:

The Process and Practice of Cultural Humility
This online training helps participants recognize the differences between cultural competence and cultural humility and identify tools to support increasing self-awareness in order to increase capacity for cultural humility.

Maintaining Cultural Sensitivity When Working with Families
This online training will help participants learn how to be cultural sensitive in your care delivery, recognize cultural differences and address any barriers to care, and identify tools and ways to deliver care in a culturally sensitive manner.
- October 23
Empathy and Person First Training
This online training, using empathy and person-first language when working directly with families of young children. Participants will learn to define what empathy is and is not; identify the factors that influence empathetic behavior; and explore techniques that enhance empathy skills.

Family Resource Page Launched
In partnership with Helpline Center, a searchable Family Resource page funded through WIC-CIAO is now live (beta) at https://familyresources.helplinecenter.org.
Resources may be sorted by zip code and type. The curated page pulls from 2-1-1 Helpline Center’s database, so please encourage those who serve South Dakota children and families to keep their listings updated. The page will soon be available in 10 languages.
Helpline University Launched
In partnership with Helpline Center, a on-demand course aimed at professionals in the social sector to learn how to utilize the online Community Directory tools to connect individuals to resources in their community. Find the course at https://university.helplinecenter.org/.
FREE Transportation Available
WIC families can now dial 211 for FREE transportation for WIC-eligible grocery shopping and WIC clinic appointments.
WIC participating families in the Sioux Falls and Rapid City areas have access to free transportation to WIC clinic appointments or grocery shopping (using WIC benefits). Car seats are not provided. Dial 211 to schedule 24-hours in advance.
